Obligations and Prohibitions

When we want to express permission, responsibilities, obligation or prohibition we use modal verbs.

Have to and must are used to express obligation. Don’t have to is used to express that something is not required and mustn’t is used to express prohibition.

Must

Must and mustn’t are the same for all persons. We use must when we think it is important to do an action or we give people orders.

• You must be home by eleven
• She must tidy up her room every day

We use must when the obligation comes from the speaker.

• I must go to the doctor, I don’t feel well.
• I must have my homework ready tonight.
• I must stop smoking.

Have to

We use have to when the obligation comes from someone else, not the speaker; for an action that is necessary because of rules.

• We have to be at the airport three hours before the flight leaves.
• At work I have to wear a uniform.
• My father has to pay the rent every month.

Mustn’t

Mustn’t is used to say that something is against the rules or against the law.

• You mustn’t smoke at school.
• You mustn’t use your telephone on a plane

Don’t have to

Don’t have to is used to show that there is no obligation.

• In this restaurant you don’t have to wear a tie.
• My brother doesn’t have to wear uniform at his school.
• We don’t have to get up early on weekends.

To express a suggestion, should or shouldn’t is used. Express suggestion in the present as follows:

1. You should call the police.
2. You should firstly, check to see if anyone is injured, secondly call  an ambulance if necessary.

Dialogue 1

In the morning, Arya want to buy a motor cycle. then arya approach pande to listen a suggestion from her

arya : Hai pande,

Pande : Hai Arya,

Arya : pande, I want to buy motorcycle tomorrow. Should I buy ninja motor or supra motor?

Pande : I think, you should buy a ninja motor.

Arya : Why is that?

Pande : Because I want to borrow it, he ….

Arya : it’s good idea, but my money not enough. Do you have any recommendation?

Pande : Why don’t you buy a bicycle?

Arya : Wow, it’s very good idea

Lost Money 

One Day Jesicca lost her money in her bag, she look so sad and Barbara come.

Barbara : Jessicaa why do you look so sad ?

Jesicca : I have some problems Barbara .

Barbara : What’s Happened to you Jes ?

Jessica : I’m very confused ! Because my money was lost .

Barbara : What ? Are you serious ? And when ?

Jesicca : Yesterday .I’m afraid to talk to my mom about it.

Barbara : Jesicca , if you have some problem you should talk your family.

Jesicca : Yea, but with who ? My father not in my house.

Barbara : In my opinion you should talk to your mother about your problem. Your mother will understand with you.

Jesicca : Do you think so ?

Barbara : Oh yea, don’t be afraid Jesicca , All is well.

Jesicca : Hemzz ,, ok ,I will talk to my mom. Thanks for Your suggestion Barbara.

Barbara : You’re welcome Jesicca don’t sad again ok ,,

Vina : Good morning Ayu, how are you?
Ayu : I’m fine, and you?
Vina : I’m fine too. By the way, how about your preparation of the presentation tomorrow?
Ayu : It is almost done. I will bring laptop tomorrow, so you don’t have to  bring your laptop, Vin.
